Information for All Clubs

Following the AGM, the clubs responses to the discussion document presented by the board Chairman and the recent Management Board meeting, please see below an update.

Andrew Clews was re-elected by the clubs to the Wetherby Cricket League Management Board. 29 “Yes”, 3 “No” and 4 “Abstain”. The board is currently discussing an internal re-structure which will clarify the roles of each member. As part of this process Bob Procter has decided to resign from the WCL Management Board with immediate effect. As many of you will be aware, Bob is no longer involved in the WCL at club level and lives well outside of the WCL geographic footprint. Having joined York CC to lead their junior development XI for the 2010 season he felt that the time constraints would be too great for him to continue in his role on the WCL Management Board.

Bob was the main architect of the outstanding WCL Website and did huge amounts of work last season in support of the Senior Cricket Committee and the Hon Treasurer. All the WCL Board members would like to place on record their thanks to Bob for all his hard work and wish him well in his new endeavour.

On a practical note, it does leave us looking to find support in a number of areas. Along with positions that we were already looking for support in we are looking for;

· Website Manager – Please direct all queries to Kevin Hutchinson in the short term

· CFO/ Hon Treasurer

· Chairman of the Junior Cricket Committee

· Sponsorship Co-ordinator

Clearly the management Board are keen to hear from anyone that is interested in supporting the WCL in any of these roles

In respect of the matters that were brought before the AGM, he Management Board have taken into consideration the views of the clubs in a number of areas. The clubs voted for a change in the way that cricket Teas are paid for. Therefore moving forward and with immediate effect the “Away” team will pay the home team £25 for teas even if choosing not to have all eleven teas. This will be trialled for 1 season and the views of clubs sought following season 2010.

The views of the clubs in respect of the format of the WCL were decisive in one respect and balanced in another. It is clear that at this time clubs do not wish to see the introduction of a “Premier League”. This idea is now considered dead and will not be brought up for debate under the existing leadership of the WCL. On the question of a two tier league of 1st & 2nd teams or remaining as we are, clubs are evenly split. Therefore the board intends to give further consideration to all options and will undertake further discussions with clubs during the coming season, ideally early enough in 2010 for decisions to be taken prior to the commencement of the season.

Being mindful of the expenditure of the WCL, The Management Board committed at the AGM to significant cost savings in 2010 and beyond to return the finances to surplus and restore the cash balance of the league. A saving of nearly £1200 per annum has been identified in producing the WCL Senior & Junior Handbooks as pdf documents on the website. This would allow all who want a copy to download their own. This is being pursued as a realistic option for the 2010 season and we will be making every effort to ensure that this is achieved.

A further saving of circa £250 has been identified in postage and stationary costs that can be removed by further use of e-mail. As a result Clubs will now be notified of ALL fines by email rather than letter.

It is crucial that EVERY club provides up to date and correct email addresses for their Treasurer, Secretary and Chairman (or a nominated surrogate e-mail address). This can be updated with the WCL through the website at any time should they change for whatever reason and this responsibility lies with the clubs. To ensure that clubs get messages and we avoid issues with club officials being away on holidays, work etc these messages will be copied to all 3 officials.

In order for this both the Handbook and the e-mail communication to happen we need all the information regarding club officials to be collected in a timely fashion. A document will be e-mailed to all the clubs shortly. All information provided by clubs must be returned by 31st January 2010 and will be uploaded onto the WCL website.

Clubs are also requested to provide up to ten other email addresses for people within their organisation to assist the board in circulating important information. It is the sole responsibility of each club to ensure that correct contact details are provided to the league. Whilst this is entirely voluntary we hope that clubs will see the benefit of information being sent out directly rather than having to forward it all individually at club level.

Dates and venues for the leagues cup finals have been decided and can be viewed on the website under league and cup fixtures and events. However one event that we would bring to your attention is the inaugural Betty Chadderton Challenge Cup. This is to be competed between the winners of the WCL Division 1 and the Fred Fleetwood Cup winners. In 2010 this will be

Old Modernians CC Vs Barwick CC – Saturday 10th April 2010 at Old Mods

We would hope to see as many there as possible for what we hope will be an exciting curtain-raiser to the season.

The WCL Management Board would like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year and we look forward to continuing the consultation process in 2010
